Weekly Wins: Things to Do in Phoenix 8/8 – 8/14

 

 

It’s the second week of August, and while temperatures aren’t getting any lower, there’s still plenty of events to take you out of the heat. Whether you’re checking out music at a local venue or grabbing a drink with some friends, there’s a good variety this week to fit whatever mood you’re in.

Wednesday, August 8

– Show up at Fair Trade Café for Chatterbox: A Storytelling Open Mic. You can choose to share a story (6-8 minutes long) based on the theme for the night or just come to show support for those in the community. Sign up begins at 7:30 pm, show starts at 8. The theme is “Roots.”

Pop band SALES is gracing the stage at Crescent Ballroom with special guests No Vacation. They produce great music that’s easy on the ears, including the hit “Chinese New Year.” The all-ages show starts at 8 pm and tickets are $17.

Thursday, August 9

– Get your day started out with a relaxing yoga class at Urban Wellness. The Sunrise Slow Flow Alignment class goes from 6-7am and is made to link breath with movement. The class is only $10.

– Bingo is always fun, but the Crescent Ballroom adds a twist with “DJINGO” – musical bingo where you guess the song to get your chance at Bingo.  Doors open at 7 pm, first round begins at 8 pm.

Friday, August 10

– The Van Buren is hosting a Beyoncé vs. Rihanna night – a tribute to the music of both powerhouse vocalists in the form of a dance party.  Tickets are $15 for the night of dancing and hits and doors open at 9 pm.

– Hang out at Film Bar for a screening of the 1980’s classic “The Breakfast Club.” After the screening, join podcasters Brian and Shelly from BS Movies for a live podcast, trivia, and prizes. Showing of the film starts at 10 pm and tickets are $9.95.

Saturday, August 11

– Tour the Heard Museum and enjoy a yoga class on your Saturday morning for just $10. The Rooted Community Yoga Project presents an all levels class from 9:30-10: 30 am. Register for a spot online.

– Join San Tan Brewing Company in Chandler for their annual “Jerry Day Celebration,” featuring a live Grateful Dead cover band. General admission is free, but $20 gets you access to the pit and a complimentary taco nacho bar. Enjoy special beers on tap.

Sunday, August 12

– Phoenix Center for the Arts hosts “Infuse” Open Mic – a night where the community comes together in the name of creativity. Anyone with a love for a performing art can show off their talents (dancing, poets, comedians, you name it). Sign up at 5:30, and the free show starts at 6 pm.

– What’s more fun than spending your time singing songs combined with great drink and food specials? Enjoy an all-day happy hour and partake in “Karaoke Sunday Funday” at Los Diablos Bar and Grill from 2-7pm.

Monday, August 13

Head over to UnderTow for a pop-up dinner featuring dishes from chefs Beau MacMillan and Peter McQuaid. Tickets are $65 for the meal including three dishes and two cocktails. The event starts at 6 pm.

– The Pressroom is hosting rapper Lil Baby for his “Harder Than Ever” tour. Best known for songs “Freestyle,” “Yes Indeed,” and “My Dawg,” – the show starts at 8 pm and tickets start at $30.

Tuesday, August 14

– Husband-wife folk-pop duo “Us the Duo” is coming to Crescent Ballroom on their Together tour. The two gained popularity on the Vine app, posting six-second covers of songs. The show starts at 8 pm and general admission tickets are $22.50.

Head over to Bonus Round in Phoenix to enjoy free arcade games and live music. Three bands will be performing, starting at 8 pm. Ages 21+.
