September 2022 PHX Movie Picks
As September swoops in, some may be sad to see the end of summer. Then, there are people like me who cackle in glee because that means Halloween is almost here. For the horror-inclined moviegoers, September is the time to start getting into the spooky spirit. That’s why we’re listing some of the best creepy cult screenings in Phoenix this month to get you in the proper creepy mood. From campy horror comedies to suburban haunted houses, there’s something for every horror fan playing this September.
Before we move onto our list of killer cult screenings this month, I’d be remiss to not also recommend the new horror release “Barbarian,” which is opening wide in theaters this week. It’s an absolutely bonkers horror film about an Airbnb and a few guests who find a terrifying secret in the basement. I won’t say anything else but if you want to watch a cult classic in the making, don’t miss this in theaters.

“All About Evil” at Majestic Tempe
Joshua Grannell, also known as drag queen Peaches Christ, wrote and directed a slasher-comedy in 2010 starring Natasha Lyonne. Now, over a decade after its initial release, All About Evil is getting the love and adoration it deserves. Lyonne plays an outcast who starts making snuff films marketed as fiction to save her father’s theater. Peaches will be at this special screening event. Rated R. 1140 E. Baseline Rd, Tempe, AZ

“Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me” at Majestic Tempe
David Lynch’s surreal series Twin Peaks is best described as an iconic and bizarre experience featuring Kyle Maclachlan as a dashing FBI agent, other dimensions, donuts, and cherry pie. Then, Lynch made a harrowing prequel film to chronicle the days before the violent murder of Laura Palmer, the girl found wrapped in plastic as the series’ beginning. While the show’s tone was often silly yet sinister, the film is purely upsetting. But boy is it gorgeous. Plus, Dana Ashbrook and Sheryl Lee will be in attendance at this screening! Rated R. 1140 E. Baseline Rd, Tempe, AZ

“The Ice Cream Man” at Majestic Tempe
Summer’s almost over but a screening of cult classic The Ice Cream Man will have you clinging onto the season’s final days with sticky hands. In the film, Gregory Tudor plays a local ice cream man. But he isn’t your typical scoop-slinging professional. No, he loves to put special toppings on his wares, including human flesh. Rated R. 1140 E. Baseline Rd, Tempe, AZ

“Poltergeist” 40th Anniversary at local AMC theaters
Regardless if you think Tobe Hooper or Stephen Spielberg directed it, there’s no denying the terrifying experience that is Poltergeist. The film follows the NAME as their home and family is ripped apart by malevolent paranormal forces. Flesh melts off faces, Carol Anne is sucked into a TV, and the American Dream is lit on fire in front of our very eyes. So celebrate the 40th anniversary of this iconic haunted house film by seeing it on the big screen. We assume no responsibility for any sleep you may lose. Rated R.

2022 marks a whole century since the release of FW Murnau’s vampire horror classic Nosferatu. Starring the terrifying Max Schreck as Count Orlock, Murnau’s film is essentially the story of Dracula but with a few tweaks due to copyright issues. The result is the pinnacle of German Expressionism, a creeping silent film that brings our vampiric fears to life. And at this screening, The Invincible Czars will play live musical accompaniment. Not Rated. 1140 E. Baseline Rd, Tempe, AZ
