In honor of National Sandwich Day, we thought we’d shout out five of our favorite sandwich shops in the Phoenix area. From classic Italian delis to a flavorful Vietnamese banh mi spot, there’s a huge variety of quality sandwich options nearby, and we love them all.

Sacks Sandwiches

Since 1990, this family-owned has been churning out well-crafted, thoughtfully constructed sandwiches with high-quality ingredients. Across three locations, in Phoenix, Arcadia, and Hardy, they serve up wholesome, delicious sandwiches and soups, including favorites like the Reuben, chicken salad sandwich, and their iconic Sacks Symphony, which features turkey breast, bacon, tomato, avocado, alfalfa sprouts, cream cheese, and mayo on soft 12-grain bread. DeFalco’s Italian Deli & Grocery

The handcrafted sandwiches at this old-school Italian deli and grocery in Scottsdale are a labor of love, with 50 years of history in the Phoenix area behind them. A family-owned spot that has changed locations a few times over the years but never lost the quality that helps them stand out from the pack. From hearty chicken parm sandwiches and meatball subs to classic cold sandwiches like their classic muffuletta and the elegantly simple Il Purista, Defalco’s is the real deal. Zookz Sandwiches

This well-loved counter service joint serves crowd-pleasing toasted sandwiches at two different locations, one in Uptown, one in Biltmore, both on Camelback. Their sandwich pockets, each one assigned a different number rather than a name, are immediately recognizable and surprisingly healthy, Favorites include the Number 40 sandwich, a veggie-friendly combination of black beans, tomatoes, avocados, potatoes, and cheddar cheese, with a picante buttermilk sauce, and the Number 30, featuring pulled pork, cheddar, and their housemade coleslaw. Mekong Sandwiches

This Vietnamese spot in Mesa is home to one of the best banh mi sandwiches in the Phoenix area. Their wildly affordable, incredibly flavorful sandwiches come in a variety of styles including the authentic Mekong Special featuring steamed pork, ham, head cheese, and pork belly, a cold cult version with sliced pork roll and pork belly, and, for adventurous eaters, a sardine, onion, and tomato sandwich. Bertha’s Cafe

This bakery/sandwich shop/cafe is a go-to lunch spot for good reason, high-quality sandwiches on fresh, tasty bread and an acclaimed, award-winning cheesecake.
