5 Perfect Places in Phoenix to Hike With Your Pet This Fall

Cooler temperatures are around the corner, and it’s time for you and your dog to get back to enjoying the great outdoors — and what better way to do that than exploring some of the Valley’s legendary hiking trails? While not every trail is a great fit for your furry friend, we’re here to help you find the safest and most enjoyable trails for both of you. Just make sure to keep your dogs leashed, regardless of the hike you choose!

1. Hole in the Rock Trail at Papago Park

Phoenix

Papago Park is one of the Valley’s top-rated trails and for good reason — it’s central and easy to access on the border of Phoenix and Tempe, easy to navigate and has great scenery with natural formations like the well-known Hole in the Rock. This hike is especially great for senior dogs as the trails are easy with little to no elevation.

2. North Mountain National Trail

Phoenix

This super popular Phoenix trail is great for kids, adults and pets. It is moderately difficult at 2.2 miles with an 885 foot, somewhat steep elevation gain. The trail is also well known for having great views, wildlife sightings and lots of wildflowers.

3. Lost Dog Wash

Scottsdale

These North Scottsdale trails start at the award-winning, dog-friendly trailhead and range from .5 miles to 4 miles, with elevation gains only going up to 1,150 feet. Hikers will enjoy plenty of parking, clear directories, clean restrooms, access to water and plenty of seating to make your hike as easy and enjoyable as possible.

4. Shaw Butte Trail

North Central Phoenix

This trail offers great hike options for beginner and intermediate hikers and pups with the ability to engage in moderately difficult activity. Plus, if you’re into great views, this is the spot to get incredible views of downtown Phoenix.

5. Hidden Valley Trail at South Mountain

Phoenix

This 3.4-mile South Mountain loop trail gains just under 1,000 feet in elevation, making it a great intermediate hike for dogs and people alike — especially if you’re up for a little climbing during your hike! Plus, you’ll encounter some beautiful wildflowers and this trail offers incredible sunflower views.
