Weekly Wins: Things to Do in Phx 10/17 – 10/23

 

 

It’s been so nice in the Valley this October (if you don’t count the unusual rain), with temperatures ten degrees below the norm for this time of year. The cooler breeze in the air and the clouds in the sky have made going out to do things that much more enjoyable.

Wednesday, October 17

PhotoCred: RadioWest

–  Catch a showing of “Bisbee ‘17”, a feature film by award-winning filmmaker Robert Greene. The film is a collaborative documentary that follows locals of Bisbee, the mining town near the Mexican border. Locals play characters and recreate scenes from a forgotten event back in 1917, where immigrant miners were deported and left for dead. The showing is at 5pm, and tickets are $9.95.

– Bar Flies is back over at Valley Bar- featuring local storytellers bringing their heartfelt and honest stories to the stage centered around a theme. This month, the theme is “Rescue Me.” Tickets are $6 for the show starting at 7pm.

Thursday, October 18

– Modern dancers are taking over the Herberger Theater for a Halloween-themed performance. “A Haunting We Will Go” features the critically acclaimed “The Return of Dracula.” The show starts at 7:30pm, with ticket prices ranging from $14-28.

– What’s a better way to get involved with the community than with a bike ride throughout downtown Phoenix? The weather asks for it -and Crescent Ballroom delivers with their free community bike ride, starting at 8pm and departing at 8:30pm. 45-60 minutes of biking is followed by discounts on burritos and drinks.

Friday, October 19

– It’s Food Truck Friday over at Civic Space Park downtown, starting at 11am. Tons of food trucks will be available for you to browse. You can then enjoy your lunchtime over at CityScape from 11:30am-1:30pm for a live jazz performance. It’s a great way to enjoy the weather and some great musicians. Plus, it’s free!

– Head over to the Arizona Science Center for an adult only, 21+ night that allows you to explore the museum while sipping on beverages and enjoying food. The event is $12, starting at 6pm. The theme this month is “Stranger Things,” so it’s great for any enthusiasts of the hit TV Show. 80’s themed outfits encouraged.

Saturday, October 20

– Bike enthusiasts should head over to Phoenix Public Market for the Fourth Annual Bike Bazaar, starting at 8am. There will be bike-related clothes, art, equipment, a raffle, and much more. There will also be a bike swap! Admission is free.

– One of the most popular events of the season is back – the Lantern Festival is heading to the Pinal Fairgrounds. Featuring live music, s’mores making, and plenty of food, you can gather to have a good time and watch thousands of lanterns light up the night sky. Gates open at 2pm, with the lantern launch set for around 6:45pm. Tickets are $70 (kids 4-12 register for $15).

– Get in the Halloween spirit with an adult’s night over at the Children’s Museum. “Play Date: Costumes and Cocktails” starts at 7pm and features a haunted house, costume contest, retro games, interactive exhibits, and much more. There will be craft beers, cocktails, and food trucks to suit your fancy. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Sunday, October 21

– Take advantage of Valley Bar’s all-night happy hour, starting at 6pm. While enjoying drink specials, you can enjoy “History Underground,” featuring obscure anecdotes of Phoenix events. The very informative and interesting show is $5 and starts at 7pm.

– Students and pro musicians take the stage over at The Nash for a night of jazz music. A variety of combinations are featured, with a solid core trio in place (Dave Henning, Selwyn Reams, and Bruce Stodola). The event is open to all ages to soak up and enjoy quality jazz music. Plus, the event is just $10 (or $5 for students). It starts at 6pm.

Monday, October 22

– Be a part of the Historic Grand Avenue arts community to help design, paint, and hang festival signs and work on mural art for the upcoming 10th Anniversary of the Grand Avenue festival. Light refreshments and beverages provided. The Paint Party starts at 7pm.

Tuesday, October 23

The Enchanted Pumpkin Garden is open from 10am-9pm over at Carefree Desert Gardens. This allows you to see a wide variety of creations from pumpkin carver Ray Villafane. Free admission. There will be live pumpkin carving displays and much more.

 

– Test your knowledge of the hit sitcom Seinfeld with a free trivia night hosted over at Valley Bar. Get $1 off craft cans and a chance at winning some great prizes. Starts at 8pm sharp.
