Weekly Wins: Things to Do in Phoenix 9/5 – 9/11
The Valley is heading into September, which means we can all breathe a sigh of relief: the worst is over (or at least we hope there’s not a heat wave hiding around the corner).
Pumpkin spice is out in full force at coffee shops and we’re all excited for the cooling temps. Don’t worry, we know that it’s still toasty out, so we’ve chosen events that will keep you cool until it really starts to feel like fall next month.
Wednesday, September 5
– Head to Film Bar for a showing of the documentary, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” – following the life and reliving the legacy of Mr. Rogers. The film has a 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes and is sure to make you smile. There’s a 12:30 pm showing for $5 and one at 5:15 pm for $9.95.
– Chatterbox Storytelling Open Mic is celebrating their one-year anniversary of performing at Fair Trade Café! The extra special show will include live records, a photo booth, giveaways, and of course, performances. The free event starts at 7:30 pm.
Thursday, September 6
– Literature enthusiasts can spend their evening at Valley Bar, where Four Chambers Press hosts “Get Lit” – a night of literary conversation. Grab a cocktail and join others to discuss ideas and topics, led by ASU lecturer and Phoenix Poet Laureate Rosemarie Dombrowski. It starts at 7 pm and is free.
– Lost Leaf bar and Lawn Gnome Publishing get together to host “Thirsty Trivia” from 7-9pm. Sign up is at 6:30 for teams between 1-10 players. Questions range from music to television to sports and more. Free to play and prizes awarded to the top teams.
Friday, September 7
– Foodies can rejoice as Food Truck Friday West returns to 83rd Ave and Union Hills (in the Sam’s Club Parking lot). The event includes 15-20 local food trucks, music, and more. There’s free parking and entry. It’s a great way to try different dishes from amazing local vendors!
– The Van Buren hosts “Selena Night” – celebrating the singer and mixing 90s and early 00’s throwbacks for a giant party. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. Starts at 10 pm.
Saturday, September 8
– Cat lovers can combine their love of yoga with feline friends at the La Gattara Cat Lounge and Boutique for a “Cats & Yoga” session. The 75-minute class features a Hatha yoga warm-up transitioning into Yin Yoga. $15 admission.
– The MonOrchid gallery in downtown Phoenix is hosting “Beats and Brunch” from 10am-3pm. Featuring tons of brunch delights (mimosas, mini waffles), live music, and interactive art pieces, it’s a great way to spend your Saturday. Tickets are $10 for entry, food is an additional charge.
Sunday, September 9
– Head over to the Arizona Science Center between 8:30 am and 5 pm for free admission, presented by Fry’s Food Stores. It’s a great way to explore all of the hands-on science galleries.
– Bishop Briggs is heading to the Van Buren on her “Church of Scars” tour. The soulful British singer-songwriter is best known for her single “River,” – but all of her songs are worth hearing. Tickets are $24 for the show starting at 8 pm.
Monday, September 10
– You can head over to Valley Bar starting at 4 pm for a night of free games ranging from pool to skeeball. Enjoy $1 off all the draft beer selections, too.
– Drinks and drawing come together at First Draft Book Bar at Changing Hands in Phoenix. A live model is provided, and all mediums and skill levels are welcome. Tickets are $8, bring your own art supplies. Starts at 6:30 pm.
Tuesday, September 11
– The Dressing Room in Phoenix is hosting their second annual “Doggy Drag Show,” featuring the best-dressed pooches in the valley. There will be a runway show to determine who will be the new queen. Tickets are $10, and all proceeds go to The Farm Rescue in Mesa. Starts at 6 pm.
– Free Agent Sports store inside Paradise Valley Mall is giving you the chance to meet Cardinals running back David Johnson for an autograph signing. The event runs from 7-8pm, and autographs are $99 per item (inscriptions $25).
