Your Month Ahead: June Things to Do in Phx

 

 

May and Memorial Day weekend are behind us, which means it’s only a matter of time before the 120 degree temps start to roll in.

It also means that now is the perfect time to start planning your fun for the start of the summer (while it’s still possible to be out and about).

We’re here to make filling up your monthly calendar easier by helping you find the most fun things to do in and around Phoenix every month.

Friday, June 1

– It’s the first Friday of the month, so you know what that means: it’s the First Friday Art Walk in downtown Phoenix, where you can see local art of all sorts, explore galleries, and eat from yummy food trucks. The monthly event takes place from 6pm-10pm.

– While we’re talking art, we might as well mention that Legend City Studios is hosting a Drink-N-Draw night where you bring drawing utensils, the adult beverage of your choice, and an optional $5 if you want a slice of pizza. Free to get in and enjoy the company of others.

Saturday, June 2

– Explore the Desert Botanical Garden in a whole new way with a Flashlight Tour from 7-9:30 pm. This is a great way to see night-blooming plants and enjoy the garden when the sun is down, and the temps are cooler.

– Rise and shine with some community yoga in Civic Space Park, free of charge. Just bring your mat and water bottle to enjoy!

Sunday, June 3

– Catch the last showing of “The Diary of Anne Frank” produced by the Arizona Theatre company and showing at the Herberger Theater Center. The production includes recently discovered writings from Anne Frank’s diary and survivor accounts to present a story of faith in the midst of horrific circumstances. Tickets here.

Monday, June 4

– Hang out at the Crescent Ballroom for Bad Movie Mondays, where hosts Michael Turner and Anwar Newton provide comedic commentary on a feature film.

Tuesday, June 5

– Check out the folk, soulful sounds of singer-songwriter Ray LaMontagne, known for hits such as “You Are the Best Thing” and “Trouble.” The show starts at Comerica Theatre at 7:30pm. Tickets here.

Join a tour led by historic experts at the gorgeous Orpheum Theatre built in 1927. A great way to see behind the scenes!

Wednesday, June 6

– Don’t miss a night of Jazz at the Nash for the Pro Jam Session featuring some of the best players in the valley. $15 charge and free for students.

– Enjoy a night at local dive bar Lost Leaf for Hump Day Burlesque, hosted by Lady Lily La Vamp. Event starts at 9:00pm.

Thursday, June 7

– Try a new twist on Bingo – DJINGO, or DJ Bingo, takes place for free at Crescent Ballroom.  All rounds are musically themed with a chance to win prizes.

–  Three-time Grammy Award-winning Maroon 5 is on tour promoting their most recent album, Red Pill Blues. Coming to the Talking Stick Resort Arena at 7:30pm.

Friday, June 8

– Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and get ready to watch a movie outdoors on the big screen in the heart of Cityscape. This is a great, free activity that occurs the 2nd Friday of every month and includes giveaways and prizes. Starts at 6:30 pm.

Saturday, June 9

– Support a good cause while you shop with the Pineapple Triangle showcase at Desoto Central Market. Grab some food from a local vendor and browse artisan crafts and vendors. A minimum of 20% of all purchases go back into local non-profits. $10 admission.

Sunday, June 10

The Hot House Orchids are here to bring down the house at Valley Bar with their eclectic sounds. A great chance to catch live music – and tickets are just between $5.00-8.00.

Monday, June 11

– R&B, Soul, and Alternative music combine for a night of free music by Tindal and other special guests, 8:00pm at Crescent Ballroom.

– Get moving at “Meet Me Downtown,” a social walk that occurs every Monday evening at 5:15pm and takes you on a 3.3-mile loop. It’s a great chance to meet new people and take in the city sights.

Tuesday, June 12

– Try your hand at some Irish Folk Dancing from 6:30-9:30 pm at the Irish Cultural Center. No prior experience needed, all dance levels welcome, and $3-5 donation is asked for.

Wednesday, June 13

– Spoken word artists of all kind grace the stage at the Grand for Poetic Soul Phoenix for a night of entertainment. House entertainment is provided for backup, or artists can choose to go acapella. Tickets between $10-12.

Thursday, June 14

– See both national and local comics performing for free at what has become a routine event at ThirdSpace. Free of charge, no drink minimum, and great laughs. More details here.

– Get caught up on weekly events with a comedic twist at ‘This Week Sucks, Tonight,’ – a show covering the latest in music, entertainment, and politics.

Friday, June 15

– Adults get the Science Museum to themselves for “Science with a Twist.” This month’s theme is “Science is a Beach,” – a summer themed party with upbeat songs and a laser show, plus drinks for sale.

Saturday, June 16

– Car enthusiasts will appreciate the Arizona Indoor Custom Car show, located inside the comfortably cool Phoenix Convention Center. Check out over 500 custom body modifications on a variety of vehicles and enjoy live music as well – a great way to spend Father’s Day weekend! $20 admission, 25% military discount.

– Experience an authentic Japanese Tea Ceremony that includes volunteers in kimonos and a presenter explaining facts about the teahouse. $30.00, with ceremonies at varied times.

Sunday, June 17

– Enjoy a night of Opera at the 2nd annual Opera and Gelato Film Festival. Die Walküre will be screened and of course, gelato will be sold.

– Hang out at Valley Bar for a night of historical anecdotes about Arizona’s people and places at “History Underground.” Only $5.00 to get in and hear some great stories.

Monday, June 18

– Market Street Kitchen is hosting a Cocktail Throwdown featuring some of the finest restaurants in the valley taking part in three rounds of cocktail creations. $15 gets you one cocktail and some light bites to eat.

Tuesday, June 19

– See American rapper Post Malone with 21 Savage at Rawhide, 7:30pm. Tickets are General Admission and $52.50 a person.

– Test your knowledge with Seinfeld Trivia at Valley Bar, with sign up starting at 7:00pm and trivia starting at 8:00pm start.

Wednesday, June 20

– Deli Tavern is hosting Cocktail Central with music and entertainment. The first 30 guests to check in get their first round free on the house!

Thursday, June 21

– “Bar Flies” at Valley Bar is a monthly reading series with presenters from the Phoenix Community. Hear true stories with a different theme every month.

– Get your soul fix at the Shakey Graves show at the Van Buren. If you like blues and rock and roll, this is the show for you.  

Friday, June 22

– Hear the Phoenix Afrobeat Orchestra deliver music for you to dance to and be inspired by at Last Exit Live.

Saturday, June 23

– Valley Youth Theatre presents “Annie the Musical” – the classic tale of the orphan who charms everyone in New York City. There’s a 2:00pm and 7:00pm showing.

Sunday, June 24

– See a special screening of “City of Women,” a film by Federico Fellini, presented at the Phoenix Art Museum. More details here.

– Dance your feet off with a night of boogie music presented by DJs Brandon McMahon, JP Woodbury, and TK Nicholson. Free and starts a 9:00pm!

Monday, June 25

– Be sure and check out the Nikon Small World Exhibit, featuring 20 prize-winning photos of microscopic objects. They show the world from the point of view that the naked eye can’t see.

Tuesday, June 26

– Share a five-minute story at Crescent Ballroom with the night’s theme at “The Moth.” The theme for the night is Endings. Endings bring new beginnings, so share your story – or just listen. Only $10!

Wednesday, June 27

– Hang out at the Rose & Crown Pub for some great English food and pub trivia. No cover charge! Starts at 7:00pm.

Thursday, June 28

–  It’s that time of year again to catch your favorite rock and punk bands at Vans Warped Tour, starting at 11am at Ak-Chin Pavilion. Bands include The Used, The Maine, Real Friends, and others, but you can check out the full lineup and grab tickets here.

– Take to the streets in Scottsdale and experience great art at the Scottsdale ArtWalk from 7:00-9:00 pm. Of course, there are plenty of restaurants to grab a bite at before.

Friday, June 29

– Head to the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess for the Fourth of July Freedom Fest. The event goes for four days, and kicks off this Friday. There’s a H2Glow Pool Party and Dive In Movie taking place. More information here.

– See the inspiring dance number “Tough as Nails” based on a true story of a family dealing with cancer. The first showing of this sold out back in May, so they’re doing another presentation. Tickets are $26, or $21 with a student ID.

– Get your bowling on with a live DJ, billiard tables, full bar and much more at Lucky Strike Bowling in downtown Phoenix for “VJ Mixing.” From 9:30pm-2:00 am.
